Lovespoons

Lovespoons originated as a courtship custom. A man would carve a small spoon out of one piece of wood, and then present it to a girl as a gift. If she accepted the spoon, it was taken as a token of betrothal. The original lovespoons were intended to be worn secretly on a ribbon around the neck, and in many parts of Wales the Welsh word for a lover is still "sponer" (literally meaning "spooner".)
