This lovespoon includes images of birds which are found in Wales: a swan, a red kite, and a heron, all commonly seen on Cors Caron nature reserve in Tregaron.
Lovespoons originated as a courtship custom. A man would carve a small spoon out of one piece of wood, and then present it to a girl as a gift. If she accepted the spoon, it was taken as a token of betrothal. The original lovespoons were intended to be worn secretly on a ribbon around the neck. And in many parts of Wales the Welsh word for a lover is still ‘sponer’ (literally meaning ‘spooner’).
