The Hare is associated worldwide with the moon, femininity and fertility, indicating a tradition which is very ancient indeed. In Roman Britain, the hare at full moon was a manifestation of Ostara or Eostre, the Celtic goddess of the moon, whose festival was at the spring equinox (March 21st). This later became the Christian festival of Easter (the Easter Bunny is not a rabbit but a hare!) There are many “magical” beliefs associated with hares, including their reputation as “shape-changers”, i.e. that human beings (usually female) can change into hares.
In Wales hares are sacred protegės of St Melangell (see our Melangell brooch and pendant), and in England there is a similar story associating them with St Anselm.
