This design is based on an incised 7th century stone found at Llanddewi-brefi, where the ground is said to have risen under St David’s feet as he preached. This piece was designed and made within three miles of the Church. The stone, along with other incised cross stones, now stands within the church at Llanddewibrefi.
Carved stone crosses are an important part of our Celtic heritage. The earliest date from as far back as the 6th Century and consist of crudely incised cross shapes on standing stones. Later high crosses, dating from the 8th to the 11th Century, are often carved on all faces with very finely decorated panels of knotwork, spiral patterns, animal figures and Biblical scenes.
