Details

Owls are mysterious birds and they feature in many legends in many countries. In the Mabinogion legends of Britain, Gwydion the magician creates a beautiful wife for Lleu from wild flowers and names her Blodeuwedd (Made of Flowers)). But Gwydion forgot to give her full human understanding and empathy, and Blodeuwedd was unfaithful to her husband. As punishment he turned her into an owl, to dwell for ever in darkness. In Welsh, all owls are female and they fly to remind us of our sins!

In other legends however, the owl has a reputation for great wisdom and knowledge, and in the ancient tale of Culhwch and Olwen an owl is one of the oldest and wisest beings in the world.
