Details

Based on a cross-decorated slab found at Llangyfelach Church in South Wales, dated to the 9th century. The knotwork of the centre cross motif is based on the triquetra or "Trinity" knot, a favourite motif of Christian Celtic art. The circle is made up of double-beaded single twists. A cast of the stone can be seen at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.

Carved stone crosses are an important part of our Celtic heritage. The earliest date from as far back as the 6th Century and consist of crudely incised cross shapes on standing stones. Later high crosses, dating from the 8th to the 11th Century, are often carved on all faces with very finely decorated panels of knotwork, spiral patterns, animal figures and Biblical scenes.
