Details
This is a typical early Celtic Cross of the type frequently found in Wales and Ireland, with a large circle surrounding the crux. Sometimes called "Sun Cross", these are a very basic symbol of the amalgamation of druidic beliefs and early Christianity.
Carved stone crosses are an important part of our Celtic heritage. The earliest date from as far back as the 6th Century and consist of crudely incised cross shapes on standing stones. Later high crosses, dating from the 8th to the 11th Century, are often carved on all faces with very finely decorated panels of knotwork, spiral patterns, animal figures and Biblical scenes.
