Gemwaith y mis – Hydref
The birds of Rhiannon were three magical birds who accompanied Rhiannon, Queen of the Otherworld. They were never seen but their singing was so sweet that anyone who heard it was immediately transported into a world of inearthly beauty, health and happiness. In the Irish legends the story is almost identical, but the Queen-Goddess is known as Clíodna, the birds are decked in bright plumage, eating from the fruit of the Otherworld apple tree, and their singing would heal the sick. |

Mae'r Garan yn symbol pwerus yng nghelfyddyd y Celtiaid ac yn ein chwedloniaeth mae'n gysylltiedig a'r goruwchnaturiol a'r syniad o ail-enedigaeth. Mae'n un o'r creaduriaid sydd yn aml yn cyfnewid â ffurf dynol. Yn y cynllun gwreiddiol hwn gan Rhiannon, mae dau o'r adar enigmatig hyn ynghudd mewn patrwm o glymwaith dyrys.
The Crane is a powerful symbol in Celtic Art; it is associated with the supernatural world and the idea of regeneration. It is one of the creatures which frequently shape-change into human form. In this original design by Rhiannon, two of these enigmatic birds are disguised in a fine filigree knotwork pattern. The crane is the sacred totem of St Columba and is revered and protected on the Isle of Iona. |

Daw cynllun y broets hwn o lythyren ‘B’ addurniedig yn sallwyr Rhigyfarch, llawysgrif a luniwyd yn Llanbadarn Fawr ar ddechrau’r ugeinfed ganrif ar ddeg. Fe’i hachubwyd rhag diddymiad yr abatai gan Harri Tudur trwy ei gario i Iwerddon. Mae’r llawysgrif yn enghraifft arbennig o gain o’r math hwn o lythrennau addurniedig; cedwir ef heddiw yn llyfyrgell Coleg y Drindod yn Nulyn.
This brooch is based on a decorative initial letter taken from the Psalter of Rhigyfarch, an 11th century illuminated manuscript originally produced at Llanbadarn Fawr in West Wales. It was saved from Henry Tudor’s dissolution of the monasteries by being taken to Ireland. The manuscript is a fine example of this type of Celtic Art. Like many other Celtic treasures, it was preserved by being taken to Dublin, where it is now held by Trinity College Library. |

Daw’r wyneb hwn o ddolen cawg efydd a ddarganfuwyd i’r gogledd o Grib Goch ar lethrau’r Wyddfa, Sir Gaernarfon. Dyddiau’r gwreiddiol o’r Ganrif 1af OC a gwelir ef yn Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Cymru, Caerdydd.
The Cat’s face motif is based on the handle of a bronze bowl found on the North Eastern slopes of Mount Snowdon in North Wales, dating form the early 1st Century AD. The original can be seen at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. |
